My dish washer is not draining. It leave a lot of water in the bottom after a cycle runs. My owners manual for my Kenmore dishwasher says to clean the “air gap” to fix this problem. Should I pour a solvent down the air gap like a drain cleaner? How do I clean this air gap?

in your dishwasher there should be alittle dome about 4-5 inches tall. take the screw out that hold it down. pay attention to how it comes apart so that you can put it back together. just clean it out. also you may have a bad check valve. it may be under the screen that runs along the back and bottom of the dish washer. when you take the screen off, reach in the center. you should feel like a plastic wing nut. unscrew it and take out. that part may be bad. and clean out.

Air gaps are usually found on the counter top. Not all areas require them. If you have a counter mounted unit, disconnect the hoses from under the top and see if they are clogged. Do not use any drain cleaner in or on a dishwasher. Check at the bottom of the inside of the DW and see if the screen is clogged up.
